On the road ... across Michigan
Across the mitten and the thumb to Port Sanilac, Lake Huron, and on to Sarnia, Ontario
We headed across Michigan: across the the mitten and the thumb to Lake Huron. Neither of us had crossed the state in this way in spite of our weeks and years in the state.
The fingers were mainly beleaguered transitional forests: a mix of deciduous and conifer trees, that were on their second and third growth, and scattered farms that were trying to eek out a living on the poor soil left from the last glaciers. They belied the same poor economy in the state. However, The Thumb was a real surprise. It was full of prosperous farms growing mainly corn, soybeans, and hay to support various cattle operations. It was a pleasure to see.
