West Fork Trail Through Oak Creek Canyon

Ostensibly, I went to see birds on this trail ... but early wildflowers became the focus, along with the anticipation of future blooms. A couple snakes and an interesting lizard with a blue underside added to the trail's interest.

West Fork Trail is considered the most popular in the area, but that was okay. In spite of a full parking lot that on rotation let in one more car -- mine, and a personable attendant, the trail was long enough to let everyone enjoy its peace and beauty. Unlike many trails where the 'hiking' public disappears after a couple hundred yards, many people followed this one to the end: 3.5 miles out with thirteen crossings of Oak Creek from about 5000 feet up. The creek crossings became welcome, although my feet never felt the wetness. Most hikers carried sticks, and I was glad to have mine. Here are a few of the myriad georgeous views along the way. Enjoy!
